Apple devices like an iPhone or iPad are really not susceptible to viruses because of how they operate and how applications are managed on the.  However there may be some merit in a security application which checks some other aspects of your online and communications activities including:

  • Blocking malicious websites.
  • Checking to see if your Email address appears as a known hacked account.
  • Backing up contacts etc.
  • Anti-theft alarms.
  • Ad-free browsing.
  • Regular security sweep of your device.
  • Monitoring of your social network accounts.
  • Device location.

There are a few options (link below), some are free some are not but it is important to understand what each does and really go through the recent AppStore reviews ignoring those where the individual clearly didn’t understand what they were getting.

Having had a look through a few of the options and their reviews none really stand out and our view is we wouldn’t bother - your iPhone or iPad is safe as it is and you just need to take the usual precautions when using it including:

  1. When browsing banking web sites etc. check for padlocks next to the address in Safari.
  2. Also when browsing enter addresses for important sides manually rather than clicking links in Emails etc.
  3. Ensure that Find my iPhone/iPad is set up.
  4. Ensure you have a PIN code set and can remotely wipe the device.
  5. Ensure you have iCloud set up to back up your iPhone/iPad contacts, pictures etc.
  6. Don't Jailbreak your device - this reduces the security considerably.

However if you mix your private/professional life through your device, make heavy use of social networking and your professional life involves work that others may want to peer into then it may well be worth considering a security application and the article linked to above is worth reading.
