Generally Windows on your PC will be set to automatically update itself and providing you follow the prompts to restart as soon as possible you should be well on the way to protecting your computer from the hackers out there. However it is good to get into the habit of checking for yourself as sometimes Windows updates can become stuck or just to check that automatic updates are not switched off.
We are going to show you how to check either a Windows 10 or a Windows 7 PC however if you have another version of Windows, the principles are generally the same but you may need to look for the Windows or Microsoft updates icon on your Start menu.
To check your Windows 10 is up to date, first click the Start button and in the Search box type update
. After a few moments, Check for updates should appear as an option
, click this option.
Windows will now show you the Update status for your Windows 10 and in the example below everything is up to date. If it is not up to date, Windows will tell you what is pending along with any instructions.
To check your Windows 7is up to date, first click the Start button and in the Search box type update
. After a few moments, Windows Update should appear as an option
, click this option.
Windows will now show you the Windows Update status and in the example below there are no further updates available so it is up to date. If it is not up to date, Windows will tell you what is pending along with any instructions.
If after checking your Windows isn't up to date you there will be a Check for updates option either as a button or an action (on the left hand side). Click this and follow the prompts as they appear.
It is also worth checking the update settings so you know how Windows will update itself and your Windows is not set to automatically check it should be set to do so.
